Hi! I'm Timmy. Well today I want to talk about something that we use all the time, but don’t really think about much - plastic spoons. These are those tinylightweight spoons we use when we order packing food or we go for a picnic outdoors. We use them once and discard them without thinking.
If you throw away plastic spoons, they are made from a special material, which means that they do not disappear easily. When we put them in the trash, they can be taken to large garbage sites called landfills. Some of these spoons even make their way into the ocean, which is really bad for the animals that live there.
Picture a sea turtle swimming in the great blue water. To the animals sometimes these spoons resemble food. A turtle might mistake a plastic spoon for a small fish or a bit of seaweed. It makes them really sick when they try to eat it, the spoon. This hurts the turtle and other sea creatures such as dolphins and whales.”
These spoons have a long, long shelf life. They don’t decompose like other things that have to be thrown out. A plastic spoon takes hundreds of years to disintegrate and may remain in your ocean or your landfill for 10,000 years! That means the spoon you use today could still exist when your great-great-grandchildren are alive.
We can use spoons that we can wash and use over and over again! They are known as reusable spoons. Some are shiny metal and built to last. Some are made of special materials, such as bamboo—which comes from plants. These spoons are far superior for our planet.
Some of our special spoons even dissolve in nature! Plastic spoons, however, have them beat for longevity — the things don’t get old. These are known as biodegradable spoons which are a great initiative towards earth.
You may think, how much difference can one little spoon make, but believe us, it does! By not using plastic spoons, we are helping to protect sea creatures and keeping our planet healthy and clean.
