Have you ever been to a party or picnic where you used special plates and forks that you throw away after you eat? Every where you turn their these throw-away plates and forks! People use them when lunching at school, celebrating birthdays and when they go out on fun adventures.
Somebody came up with a brilliant idea many years ago to create plates that you don’t need to wash. The adoration for these plates really took off in the 1950s. Just think how happy kids (and their parents) were when they learned to eat and simply pitch the plate into the trash! Washing up after a large meal? Never again.
Others are concerned about these disposable plates. They want to protect our planet and have it clean. These plates are frequently produced from plastic or paper, which can take a very, very long time to decompose. They can hang out in large trash spots, called landfills, in the ground for hundreds of years when we throw them away!
We can be earth heroes! All of these are regular plates that are far less good for our world. There are plates made from materials such as glass, metal, or even bamboo. Which is neat because you can wash these and reuse them over and over. Some plates are made from other special materials like corn or sugar plants that can decompose quickly in the ground.
Disposable plates are so easy and convenient. After you eat you can simply pick up and throw away the plate. No washing, scrubbing or waiting for dishes to dry! However, the plates could be, over time, more expensive. Every time you use a new plate you have to spend a little bit more.
Do your best to be a planet protector when you use throw-away plates! Seek plates that are recyclable or that biodegrade readily in nature. Some plates have special labels that prove they are kind to the earth. When you opt for these plates, you preserve the beauty and joy in our world.
So the next time you throw a party or have a picnic, discuss using earth-friendly plates with your family. Perhaps you can get some cool reusable plates or opt for environmentally friendly throw-away plates. Excerpt: Every little bit helps to make our planet a better place!
