Long ago, there were no spoons or forks. They ate food with their hands. Over the years, people began creating utensils for the ease of eating. Because they are involved in the process, because they care, they started out with spoons and forks made out of all sorts of materials metal, wood, et cetera.
Then people began creating spoons and forks out of plastic. Plastic spoons and forks were so simple to use. They were light, inexpensive, and one could toss the plates, too, after eating. It initially appeared to be a good idea.
But over time people found out plastic spoons and forks are bad for our planet. These plastic tools don’t just go away easily when people throw them out. Instead, they spend many, many years on the ground or in water. That’s a big problem for animals and plants.
Imagine a fish in the ocean swimming. The plastic could, for example, be mistaken as food by the fish. It can make the fish very sick when the fish tries to eat it. With others, plastic in the water causes them to die. This is of course sad for the fish, and bad for our planet.
So, what can we do to help? Others are discovering new methods of crafting spoons and forks that are gentle on our world. Another good example is the bamboo. Bamboo is a special kind of grass that grows super fast. Bamboo spoons can be used repeatedly, and when they are old, they decompose naturally, harmless to anything.
We can all help care for this planet with appropriate spoons and forks. We can consume wooden, metallic, bamboo spoons, and forks instead of using the plastic we regularly throw away. These are reusable tools that can be washed and used multiple times. It helps to reduce garbage that we produce.
Next time you consume a meal, consider which spoon or fork you are using. Can you pick one that helps care for our world? So whenever we do something positive, we are contributing to the health and happiness of our planet!
